Manchester United show signs of progress despite opening defeat to Arsenal
The Red Devils may have fallen to a narrow 1-0 defeat in their Premier League opener against Arsenal, but the performance at Old Trafford offered genuine reasons for optimism under new coach Ruben Amorim.
“We proved today that we can win any game in the Premier League, especially against a great team like Arsenal,” Amorim told reporters after the match. “We were the better team. It’s our feeling that we played better. In the end, we lose the game, but I’m really proud of the effort they put in.”
Unlike his predecessor Erik ten Hag—who often sounded delusional when insisting that his struggling side were “on the right track”—Amorim had substance behind his words. United were genuinely much-improved, showing fluidity, discipline, and attacking intent against a title-chasing Arsenal team.
The numbers reinforce Amorim’s assessment. United controlled 61% possession, attempted 22 shots compared to Arsenal’s nine, and repeatedly tested David Raya, who was named Player of the Match after producing seven crucial saves. Among them was a stunning fingertip stop to deny United’s new No.10, Matheus Cunha.
United’s downfall ultimately came from a moment of calamity, as goalkeeper Altay Bayindir’s inexplicable error gifted Riccardo Calafiori the only goal of the game. Without that mistake, the result might well have matched the performance.
Still, despite the defeat, this felt like a step forward for United—a display that hinted at a new identity under Amorim and a potential return to relevance in the Premier League.
