Despite its appearance, the garment worn by many professional footballers is not a bra. It is called a GPS Performance Vest (or GPS Tracker Vest), a specially designed elastic vest that holds a small GPS tracking device and motion sensors between the shoulder blades.
Why do footballers wear it?
The GPS Performance Vest helps coaches, fitness trainers, and sports scientists monitor an athlete’s physical performance in real time. It provides valuable data, including:
Distance Covered: Measures how many kilometers a player runs during training or a match.
Speed and Top Speed: Tracks both average and maximum running speed.
Sprint Count: Records how many high-intensity sprints a player performs.
Acceleration and Deceleration: Measures how quickly a player increases or decreases speed.
Physical Workload: Evaluates the overall physical stress placed on the player’s body.
Injury Prevention: Identifies signs of fatigue or overload so coaches can adjust training intensity before injuries occur.
Recovery Monitoring: Helps determine whether an injured player has recovered sufficiently to return to training or competitive matches.
Modern GPS tracking systems can monitor around 30–32 different performance metrics, depending on the manufacturer and model. The data collected often influences coaching decisions, including when to substitute a player or reduce their workload during training.
Why does it look like a sports bra?
The vest is designed to fit tightly against the body so that the GPS unit and motion sensors remain stable during movement. If the device shifts while a player is running, the accuracy of the collected data may decrease.
The sensor is positioned on the upper back, between the shoulders, where it has a clearer view of the sky, allowing the GPS signal to be received more accurately. Because of this close-fitting design, the vest resembles a sports bra, even though its purpose is entirely different.
Do only male footballers wear it?
No. Both male and female footballers use GPS tracking technology.
The difference is mainly in the design:
Male players usually wear a separate GPS performance vest over or under their training shirt.
Female players often have the GPS tracker integrated into their sports bra, making it more comfortable and practical.
Looking Ahead
Many of us already use smartwatches to track our steps, heart rate, distance, and other fitness metrics. Professional athletes simply use a more advanced system designed specifically for elite sports performance.
As wearable technology continues to evolve, it is entirely possible that similar body-worn tracking devices will become common among the general public. What seems unusual today may become a normal part of everyday fitness in the future.
